Il 26 luglio 1866, in una grande casa del Kensington rurale, nacque Beatrix Potter, figlia di Rupert e di Helen Leech, entrambi appartenenti a famiglie benestanti. Bambina di natura curiosa e socievole, fu costretta a trascorrere gran parte dell'infanzia in compagnia della balia Fu proprio nell'isolamento dagli altri bambini che imparò a conoscere e amare la natura e quei piccoli animali di campagna che popolano le sue storie illustrate. Accanto alle opere pubblicate per i lettori, prima fra tutte "The Tale of Peter Rabbit", sono testimoni del talento creativo di Beatrix Potter i diari e le lettere, in particolare quelle inviate ai bambini bisognosi delle sue confortevoli storie. Riccardo Mainetti per flower-ed ha tradotto per la prima volta in italiano "Una ghirlanda per ragazze" di Louisa May Alcott, "Il sentiero alpino. La storia della mia carriera" di Lucy Maud Montgomery e "Vita e avventure di Jack Engle" di Walt Whitman.
