Johann Kinau schrieb über die Zeit seiner Anfänge als Schriftsteller: "Meine Freude ist stets, wenn Seeleute mir sagen, ich kennte die Seefahrt wie einer von ihnen, und ich mü te selbst gefischt und gefahren haben". Gerne wäre er auch Fischer und Seemann geworden. Wenn da nicht der Vater ganz anderer Meinung gewesen wäre. So musste der Sohn zunächst Kaufmann und Buchhalter werden. Später konnte Kinau, der sich nun als Schriftsteller Gorch Fock nannte, dem harten, kargen Leben der Hochseefischer ein literarisches Denkmal setzen mit der Geschichte um den Finkenwerder Seefischer Klaus Mewes, der um seine Heimat, seine überkommene Arbeits- und Lebenswelt kämpft und schlie lich mit seinem Ewer ein Opfer der vom Sturm gepeitschten See wird.
