In questa opera di fiction a settanta anni di distanza due donne compiono, ciascuna in un contesto storico-politico differente, un'opera salvifica nei confronti di bambini vittime di genocidio di natura razziale (come nel caso di Etty Hillesum, che si definiva "la ragazza che non sapeva inginocchiarsi", nel campo di Westerbork) o di scenari di guerra civile (come nel caso di Helena nel contesto della guerra civile in Siria). Ma un inaspettato fil rouge emerge a poco a poco tra le due storie, un nesso che uno strano ricercatore tenta di mettere in luce. Questi a poco a poco scopre che la storia di uno dei bambini salvato da Etty nel campo di Westerbork si intreccia con la biografia "segreta" di Helena.
