Her literary skill is affective and undeniable. The author peppers her musings, which remind readers to accept that life is not black and white, with startlingly abrupt pieces such as "Writing", which prompted my audible gasp, as it described her literary process. In other words, just when you think you might have figured out where Akers' flow will take you with the sensitive emotions expressed in pieces such as the bittersweet, "Overestimated" and gentle, "The First Appearance", she surprises you with the epic biographical piece on her childhood, "The Porch", which takes you deeper than you expected to go. Many of her poems resonated with me in a way few other poets' words have.
