Each summer, Mortimer J. Adler conducts a seminar at the Aspen Institute in Colorado. At the 1981 seminar, leaders from the worlds of business, literature, education, and the arts joined him in an in-depth consideration of the six great ideas that are the subject of this book: Truth, Goodness, and Beauty - the ideas we judge by; and Liberty, Equality and Justice - the ideas we act on. The group discussions and conversations between Dr. Adler and journalist Bill Moyers were filmed for broadcast on public television, and thousands of people followed their exploration of these important ideas. Mortimer J. Adler (1902-2001) was an American philosopher, educator, and editor, noted for his work in promoting liberal education and the study of the great classics of philosophy. He earned his PhD in philosophy from Columbia University in 1928 and taught jurisprudence at the University of Chicago starting in 1930. Along with Robert M. Hutchins, he edited the series Great Books of the Western World in 1952.

Among his most influential works are How to Read a Book (1940), How to Think About God (1980), and Six Great Ideas (1981), all within the realm of philosophy and education. For his contributions to thought and education, he received the National Humanities Medal in 1976 and the Charles Frankel Prize in 1990.
