José María Maza Sancho was born in Valparaíso in 1948 and holds a degree in Astronomy from the University of Chile and a PhD in Astronomy from the University of Toronto, Canada. He has published more than one hundred and twenty research articles in astronomy journals. He is a full professor of Astronomy at the University of Chile. He received the National Prize for Exact Sciences in 1999 and is a full member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences. He is the author of Contemporary Astronomy and co-author of Supernovas. His book We Are Stardust has become the first scientific dissemination bestseller in Chile, selling more than 70,000 copies.
