Todo es extraño, por no decir paradójico o inverosímil, en la vida y en la obra de Essad Bey, en realidad Lev Nussimbaum (Kiev, 1905-Positano, 1942), un judío ruso criado en Bakú que se convierte al islamismo en 1922, escribe en alemán empleando varios seudónimos, huye de la Alemania nazi en 1934 para exiliarse en la Italia fascista y muere tempranamente, a los 36 años, pero tras publicar, exitosa y sorprendentemente, no menos de dieciocho libros en siete años (1930-1937), entre ellos, dos espléndidas novelas: Alí y Nino y Petróleo y sangre en Oriente (Espuela de Plata, 2014). Esta temprana biografía de Stalin, un tanto parcial pero que ofrece interesante información sobre la juventud del dictador ruso, fue editada originalmente por la prestigiosa Viking Press de Nueva York con un esclarecedor subtítulo: Stalin: the Career of a Fanatic (1931). Rescatamos la traducción hecha en 1932 por Emilio M. Martínez Amador para la editorial España, patrocinadora también de otros autores de éxito en esos años, como Erich María Remarque o León Trotski.
