Synopsis "Stealin' and Theivin': The Great Depression"

This story, written in large print, is narrated by Buddy Summers who tells about his hero, Brady Joe Linwood, Little Dove's son. Brady Joe had gained a reputation as a good hunter and trapper, but was arrested for stealin' and thievin' chickens to bait traps. Clifton Lenoard said he knew Brady Joe was the one, but some people said Clifton was windy. Mr. James Lee Simpkins said Clifton Leonard said Brady Joe was the one and Mr. Simpkins said he must go report Brady Joe to the sheriff and have him arrested. People were losing chickens which were very valuable for food and for egg sales during the great depression. Brady Joe's faithful dog, ol' Biscuit knew where all of the traps were located and had to lead the search for Brady Joe' traps when he was taken to jail. There was a panther lurking somewhere in the trees, ready to spring on someone and rip their throat out. Stealin' and Thievin was getting bad in the south and also the north because of the Great Depression. Some would kill if necessary to get what they wanted. There had been a hanging nearby for stealin' chickens.....they say. Anna Corinne was worried for Brady Joe. They heard the blood curdling scream of the panther. They found him with the throat ripped out and the head attached by the back of the neck which brought cold chills.
