تتخلّى هذه الرواية عن السياق الزمني السائد للبدايات والنهايات. الكاتب والأكاديمي السوري طارق شمّا يأخذ القارئ في متاهات الكتابة واحتمالاتها المفتوحة. يشرع البطل عادل في التدوين هرباً من الفقد، لكنّ هذه العمليّة الشاقّة لن تؤدّي إلّا إلى مسودّات عديدة، يحاول من خلالها التخلّص من الصمت الفادح الذي خيّم على حياته. كأنه حين ودّع وداد، حاول أن يخترعها مجدّداً بهذه الصفحات. الفقد لا تملأه إلا الكلمات، أو لعلّها تبدّده مؤقّتاً. هل يُحكِم الكاتب السيطرة على مجريات الأحداث وحيوات شخوصه؟ أم أنّ الحبكة تفيض عن قدرته على السيطرة عليها فتمضي في كلّ الوجهات باستثناء تلك التي كان قد قرّرها أو افتراضها مسبقاً؟ نتابع فصول حكاية تتوالد منها القصص وتتداخل، كما لو أنها تمرين متواصل على الكتابة. ما بين عادل وليلى سالم، أكثر من علاقة كاتب بشخصيّةٍ تتمرّد عليه، وأكثر من علاقة مشاهد بممثّلة، أو طبيب بمريضته. كلّما حاول اكتشافها أو الوصول إليها، تضاعف جهله بها، وكلّما حاول اقتيادها إلى مصير، أفلتَت منه بمهارةٍ، مبدّلة بذلك في أحداث الرواية.
