The Ghost Outfit
Steve Biancucci (Author) · SebsBookWorld · Paperback
The Ghost Outfit: Chicago, March 1926. Sal Messina, lieutenant in the Outfit, walks into a warehouse for a routine job and into an ambush arranged by the one man he trusted completely. Before the bullets find him, something else does: a pulse of displaced energy from a machine that has not yet been built, pulling him ninety-nine years forward into a city he does not recognise.
New York, March 2025. Alikai Bolton, a theoretical physicist working alone in a Tribeca building, has spent three years constructing a time displacement device in secret. When a man from 1926 arrives in his lab covered in blood and speaking in the clipped declarative of another century, Alikai understands that his machine has done something he did not intend. It has brought someone back from the past. And the Fading, a progressive translucency in his own hand that has been advancing for weeks, tells him the timeline has been broken and is running out of time to correct itself.
Sal must go back. The machine must be fixed. And between those two facts lies fifty-eight days of a man from 1926 learning to survive in 2025: the cashless city, the surveillance economy, the particular humiliations and occasional wonders of a world built on systems he cannot touch. Around him, Alikai races to find a calibration error buried in the machine's original build, while his sister Elena, a corporate attorney, works to dismantle the tech billionaire who is hunting the machine for his own purposes.
As the deadline narrows, Sal recruits and leads a crew of six, executes a server room operation that destroys the billionaire's leverage, and stands in a lab at midnight watching a machine power up that will either send him home or confirm that home no longer exists.
He goes back. The warehouse is waiting. And Sal Messina, who arrived as a weapon and spent fifty-eight days becoming something more considered, walks into the room where his oldest friend arranged his death with the patience of a man who has already seen how the trap is set.
The Ghost Outfit is a noir time-travel novel about loyalty, the Code that governs a certain kind of man, and the specific quality of choosing to go home even when home means returning to the night someone tried to kill you. It is also a love story, of the kind that cannot be consummated and cannot be abandoned, and a story about what six people discover, decades later, that their Saturday morning in April was actually part of.
