William J. Bernstein (born in 1948) is a prominent financial theorist and American neurologist, known for his scientific and accessible approach to personal investing. Before turning to finance, Bernstein earned a PhD in chemistry and a degree in medicine, working as a neurologist. His transition to the financial world occurred when he applied his scientific training to the analysis of markets and investment portfolios.

He is the author of several influential books, including The Four Pillars of Investing (2002), where he presents a structured approach to building diversified portfolios based on financial theory, market history, investor psychology, and investment practice. His work has been fundamental in promoting passive investing and the use of indexed funds among individual investors.

Currently, Bernstein co-directs Efficient Frontier Advisors, a firm that manages high-net-worth portfolios, and maintains the website EfficientFrontier.com, where he shares analysis and tools on asset allocation. His legacy is based on empowering investors to manage their own portfolios with knowledge and discipline.
