Robert Jordan, pseudonym of James Oliver Rigney Jr., was a prominent American writer born in Charleston, South Carolina, on October 17, 1948. He is mainly recognized for his epic fantasy series "The Wheel of Time", which began with "The Eye of the World" in 1990. Before turning to writing, Jordan graduated in physics from The Citadel, a military college in South Carolina, and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War.

In addition to "The Wheel of Time", Jordan wrote several novels about "Conan the Barbarian" in the 1980s, contributing to the heroic fantasy genre. After his death in 2007, author Brandon Sanderson completed the last volumes of "The Wheel of Time" based on notes left by Jordan. The series has been translated into multiple languages and has established Jordan as one of the most influential authors in contemporary fantasy literature.
