Synopsis "The Skill Square"

So why the Skill Square? A good first touch in the game will give a player and advantage. "Time" being one of them! "Time" for the next decision, which may be a shot, a pass or even just retaining possession of the ball. With a good first touch, a player will grow in confidence and skill on the ball. The Skill Square is for all ages and ability levels and can be adapted to suit, which is why I love using it. I have witnessed firsthand the results from using the Skill Square and by following and practicing the drills in this book, a player will certainly develop their first touch and overall control of the ball. I generally set up the Skill Square as a 5ft x 5ft square with flat cones at each corner. The size can be adjusted to suit ages and abilities. If a player can control the ball within this area then it provides them with the ability, after practicing, to retain possession in a game and become a better player. All too often a player loses possession quickly due to a poor first touch and not being able to control the ball. It doesn't have to be the case and using the skill square is a chance to change that!
