Three preacher's kids were talking on the telephone, one day. They started talking about what a healthy church was, and what they really liked in churches. They talked about what they'd like to see, in a church, and what a healthy church would look like. Where two or more are gathered in my name... there is absolutely no reason that the church cannot be a vibrant community center, a place where people go to recharge, to clean out their stress, and to reconnect with the spirit. We aren't offering doctrine. That is somebody else's job. We simply offer ideas on simple ways to put more life, and energy, into churches, so they can realize the promises of Jesus. We've each had wide experience, and bring a number of different ideas together, under one cover. We believe the church has a lot to offer. With a few tweaks, it can be once again a center of community. This book is for people who want to revive the church. If the conventional methods were working, this book would never have been written. Life is a about growth. If you aren't growing, you are decaying. There is no middle ground. If you want new results, it is necessary to try new things. If we never tried new things, we'd still be getting dinner by using rabbit sticks, and roasting our meat over an open fire. We aren't here to debate. We only offer ideas that have worked, in our experience. We have lived overseas. We have sought Truth all our lives. Many rules that we thought were absolute turned out to be far more flexible than we thought. Our lives have seemed to be chaos, when we were living them. Yet, when we look back, it is as if an invisible hand was guiding us, every step of the way. One rule that we believe to be true, based on my direct experience, is that Respect is the center of the circle of community. From respect grows rapport, and trust. From that grows communication, from communication grows cooperation, and cooperation is how human beings survive. People, cooperating in groups, have fun. The group energy can help one to recharge, to clean out energy that is no longer needed, and to help one have fun. Americans make pilgrimages. They go to places like Disneyworld. Why can't we have fun in church, in the same way? What we need is to make the church into a place that is full of healthy energy, so people can recharge. It is not enough to say that we have Christ, or that we have Love. Energy stagnates if it's not in motion. We need to put more energy into churches. That will revive them. That is the purpose of this book.
