Heutzutage ist die Tracheotomie ein altbewährtes Verfahren, das für das Management der Atemwege in akuten Situationen, z. B. bei Kiefer- und Kehlkopftraumata, und für die Schaffung eines sicheren Atemwegs zur Behandlung von Infektionen im Kopf- und Halsbereich eingesetzt wird. Die Tracheotomie wird routinemä ig auf der Intensivstation bei Patienten mit längerer mechanischer Beatmung und bei der Behandlung von onkologischen Operationen und Rekonstruktionen im Kopf-Hals-Bereich durchgeführt. Der Mund-, Kiefer- und Gesichtschirurg ist routinemä ig an chirurgischen Eingriffen beteiligt, die einen sicheren Atemweg erfordern, sei es akut oder im Rahmen eines langfristigen Atemwegsmanagements.
