Matsuo Bashō (1644-1694) fue uno de los poetas más importantes de la literatura japonesa y es considerado el gran maestro del haiku. Nacido como Matsuo Kinsaku, dedicó gran parte de su vida a viajar por Japón, experiencias que luego transformó en poesía marcada por la contemplación de la naturaleza, la sencillez y la fugacidad de la vida.

Su obra más conocida, Sendas de Oku, reúne las reflexiones y poemas surgidos de uno de sus viajes por el norte de Japón. Bashō elevó el haiku, hasta entonces considerado una forma poética menor, convirtiéndolo en una expresión de gran profundidad espiritual y estética. Su estilo se caracteriza por la sobriedad, la conexión con la naturaleza y la capacidad de encontrar belleza en los momentos cotidianos.

Murió en Osaka en 1694, dejando una enorme influencia en la poesía japonesa. Su obra continúa siendo fundamental para comprender el haiku y la tradición literaria japonesa.
