Synopsis "Twelve Clocks"

Twelve Clocks: A Structural History of Ancient Greece in Twelve Poems approaches history through systems rather than narrative.Across twelve compressed poems, J. A. Gucci places observable timekeeping systems in structural correspondence with systems from ancient Greece. Mechanical clocks, sundials, granular timers, combustion clocks, environmental clocks, and hydraulic systems provide physical structures in which motion is arrested and released, materials accumulate and disperse, components compete and cooperate, and changing relations produce conditions unavailable to any element alone. Each poem is organized through a Paradox Triad: three related conditions whose interaction generates structural tension. Autonomy exists alongside competition and alliance. Scarcity produces exchange and dependence. Participation encounters persuasion and conflict. Rivalry operates within cooperation and hegemony. Opposition becomes a condition of inquiry and knowledge. Conquest leads toward fusion and transformation. The clocks are not symbols for ancient Greece, and the poems do not reduce history to mechanical models. Instead, the physical and historical systems remain distinct. Their relationship exists only where their observable behaviors coincide.Twelve Clocks is composed using Absolute Composition, a methodology developed by Gucci in which poetic structure is organized through observable behavior rather than symbolic association. Punctuation, lineation, white space, compression, motion, resistance, accumulation, release, and transformation participate directly in the structures constructed on the page. The result is neither a conventional history of ancient Greece nor a collection of historical poems. It is an inquiry into the structures that emerge when independent conditions enter into relation-and into a question that runs throughout the collection:What can only be produced through interaction?
