Paul Ekman (Washington D. C., 1934) is an American psychologist, pioneer in the study of emotions and their facial expression. Professor Emeritus at the University of California in San Francisco, he developed the Facial Action Coding System (FACS) and demonstrated the biological universality of certain basic emotions such as joy, fear, or anger. His work has influenced areas such as forensic psychology, security, and intercultural communication.

Among his most notable works are Telling Lies, Emotions Revealed, and Unmasking the Face, co-written with Wallace V. Friesen. His research inspired the TV series Lie to Me, in which he collaborated as a scientific consultant.
