Victor Hugo es, sin duda, el mas fecundo de los autores franceses romanticos, cuya obra domina todo el siglo XIX. Autor de poesia, teatro y novela, su obra ha pervivido a lo largo de los tiempos y hoy continua leyendose con el mismo entusiasmo de hace cien anos, debido a su gran fuerza expresiva y su notable penetracion psicologica. En 1852, Victor Hugo se exilio con su familia en la britanica isla de Jersey donde el hijo menor, Francois Victor, decide ocupar el tiempo traduciendo al frances las obras de Shakespeare. Su padre se encargara de prologarlas. Sin embargo, ese simple prologo se fue ampliando hasta convertirse en un extenso libro publicado doce anos despues con el titulo de Vida de Shakespeare: sin duda el texto fundamental de Hugo sobre la creacion literaria, y en el que el autor resume como en ningun otro las ideas claves del Romanticismo en torno a la literatura. Victor Hugo no se limito a crear una semblanza de Shakespeare y su obra, sino que ademas reflexiona sobre la critica literaria, sobre otros grandes escritores de la epoca, sobre la relaciones entre el arte y la ciencia. Una obra, en suma, apasionante que nos revela la plenitud del genio creador de Victor Hugo.

Victor Marie Hugo (Besançon, France, 1802 - 1885) was a writer, poet, playwright, and French politician, a central figure of Romanticism and one of the most influential literary voices of the 19th century. His work includes emblematic novels such as Les Misérables (1862), which denounces social injustice in 19th century France, and The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831), which powerfully portrays life in medieval Paris. In theater, he revolutionized the genre with plays like Hernani (1830) and Cromwell (1827), while his poetry, highlighted in collections such as Les Contemplations (1856) and The Legend of the Centuries (1859-1883), combines lyricism and social commitment

Exiled for about 20 years due to his opposition to the regime of Napoleon III, he produced many of his most significant works during this period, also expanding his political work as a deputy and senator after his return. He was recognized with membership in the French Academy and the Legion of Honor. His literary and political legacy remains a benchmark for social justice and artistic expression.
