Quecksilber ist eines der Schwermetalle, die eine Hemmung des photosynthetischen Elektronentransports an mehreren Stellen zwischen den beiden Photosystemen bewirken, wobei PS-II empfindlicher ist als PS-I. Quecksilber verursacht in niedriger Konzentration Veränderungen der Absorptions- und Fluoreszenzspektren und wirkt sich auf die Energieübertragung vom Phycobilsom zum Reaktionszentrum aus. Bei kurzfristiger Inkubation verändert es die Wechselwirkung zwischen Chromophor und Apo-Protien des Phycocyanins. Langfristige Inkubation hingegen führt zum Abbau der β-Untereinheit von Phycocyanin.
