Nikos Kazantzakis fue un filósofo y escritor griego que nació en Herklion, Creta, el 18 de febrero de 1883 y que falleció el 26 de octubre en Friburgo, Alemania. Cuando nació, Creta todavía pertenecía al Imperio Otomano. Estudió Derecho en la Universidad de Atenas, y en 1907 se trasladó a París para estudiar Filosofía, donde se vio muy influido por Henri Bergson. Al regresar a Grecia, comenzó su labor como traductor de obras de filosofía. Se casó con Galatea Alexiou en 1911, divorciándose de ella en 1926. En 1945 volvió a casarse, con Eleni Samiou. Viajó con frecuencia: a París, Berlín, Italia, Rusia, España, Egipto, China, Japón y Checoslovaquia. Estando en Berlín descubrió el comunismo y se hizo admirador de Lenin, pero se vio desilusionado con la actuación de Stalin. Poco a poco sus creencias nacionalistas se fueron suavizando y se fue inclinando hacia una ideología más o menos universalista. En 1945 lideró un pequeño partido de izquierdas no comunista, llegando a ser ministro en Grecia, pero abandonó su puesto al año. Fue recomendado para recibir el Premio Nobel de Literatura, pero perdió ante Albert Camus por un solo voto. Murió de leucemia en Alemania.

La obra de Kazantzakis llegó a hacerse popular gracias a la adaptación de una de sus obras al cine. Alexis Zorbas fue adaptada por el director Michael Cacoyannis con el nombre Zorba el Griego.
