Inzwischen ist zwar akzeptiert, die Epoche nicht mehr als 'klassisch' zu apostrophieren; ob sie aber unter dem Leitmotiv konsensualer Stabilität oder konflikthafter Dynamik gesehen werden kann, wird weiter intensiv diskutiert, zumal schon die antiken Zeitgenossen das 'kurze zweite Jahrhundert' (202-133 v. Chr.) sehr unterschiedlich wahrnahmen. Der Band geht der Frage nach, wie Kontingenzen in der Republik ganz unterschiedlich verhandelt wurden, und nimmt die mittlere Republik damit als ergebnisoffene Epoche ernst.
