Allan Savory
Allan Savory (born in 1935 in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe) is an ecologist, biologist, and rancher known for developing the concept of Holistic Management, a comprehensive methodology for ecosystem and natural resource management. Throughout his career, he has promoted regenerative practices aimed at reversing desertification and improving soil health through planned grazing. In 1984, he co-founded the Center for Holistic Management in the United States, which later became the Savory Institute, an international organization dedicated to the regeneration of grasslands and degraded lands.
Among his most notable works is Holistic Management: A Commonsense Revolution to Restore Our Environment (2013), co-written with Jody Butterfield, which presents a systemic approach to decision-making in land management. He has also contributed to the Holistic Management Handbook, alongside Sam Bingham and Jody Butterfield, a practical guide for implementing these techniques in various agricultural contexts. His work has been recognized internationally, including the Banksia International Award in 2003 and the Buckminster Fuller Challenge in 2010.
