Bernardo Subercaseaux
Bernardo Subercaseaux Sommerhoff (Santiago de Chile, 1942) is a distinguished Chilean essayist, academic, and cultural critic. With a degree in Philosophy, majoring in General Literature from the University of Chile, he earned his PhD in Romance Languages and Literatures at Harvard University. He has taught at institutions such as the universities of Washington, Stanford, Maryland, Havana, and del Rosario, and is a Full Professor in the Faculty of Philosophy and Humanities at the University of Chile. For a decade, he directed the Chilean Literature Review and has been an active member in various cultural initiatives.

Among his most significant works are History of the Book in Chile: From the Colony to the Bicentennial (2010), History of Ideas and Culture in Chile (2011), Nation and Culture in Latin America (2002), and Chile, a Modern Country? (1997). His work focuses on cultural essays, intellectual history, and literary criticism, addressing issues such as national identity, modernity, and cultural transformations in Chile and Latin America. In 2015, he was awarded the Alonso de Ercilla Prize for his contribution to national culture.
