Germán E. Berrios
Germán E. Berríos (Tacna, Peru, 1940) is a distinguished neuropsychiatrist, philosopher, and historian of psychiatry. Educated in medicine and philosophy at the National University of San Marcos, he expanded his studies in Oxford and developed his academic career at the University of Cambridge, where he was a professor of Epistemology of Psychiatry and head of the Department of Neuropsychiatry for over three decades. He is the founder and editor of the History of Psychiatry journal and has been recognized with multiple honorary doctorates and international awards.
Among his most influential works is History of the Symptoms of Mental Disorders: Descriptive Psychopathology since the Nineteenth Century (1996, translated into Spanish in 2008), awarded by the British Medical Association. Other notable publications include What is Neuropsychiatry? (2005) and Towards a New Epistemology of Psychiatry (2011). His interdisciplinary approach has been fundamental in the historical and conceptual understanding of mental disorders.
