María Luisa Puga
María Luisa Puga (Mexico City, February 3, 1944 – December 25, 2004) was a Mexican writer and essayist known for her deep exploration of the human condition, particularly in relation to pain, memory, and identity. Orphaned at a young age, her childhood was spent between Acapulco and Mazatlán, and later she lived in Mexico City. At 24, she moved to Europe, living in London, Rome, Greece, Lebanon, and Nairobi, experiences that enriched her literary perspective.
Her work includes novels, short stories, chronicles, and essays. In 1983, she received the Xavier Villaurrutia Award for her novel Panic or Danger. In 1995, she was kidnapped, an experience she captured in the novel Nine Dawns and a Half. In 2004, she published Diary of Pain, where she narrates her battle against rheumatoid arthritis and advanced cancer. She passed away that same year.
Puga left a significant literary legacy, with works translated into several languages and a profound reflection on life and suffering. Her personal diaries were donated in 2016 to the University of Texas at Austin, preserving her voice and her view of the world.
