Maria Pia Alberzoni
Maria Pia Alberzoni (1952) is an Italian historian specialized in medieval history, with an emphasis on religious orders of the 13th century, particularly the Franciscans and Poor Clares. She is a full professor of Medieval History at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan and has been a visiting professor at universities such as Vienna, Dresden, Mainz, and Wuppertal. Her research focuses on the history of religious orders in the Middle Ages, the papacy, and the history of Lombardy.

Among her most notable works are Francescanesimo a Milano nel Duecento (1991), Clare of Assisi and the Poor Sisters in the 13th Century (2004), Santa povertà e beata semplicità. Francesco d’Assisi e la Chiesa romana (2015) and Francisco de Asís y el primer siglo de historia franciscana (1999), the latter co-authored with José Antonio Guerra Zubillaga. She has also co-edited volumes such as Legati e delegati papali (2012) and Autorità e consenso. Regnum e monarchia nell’Europa medievale (2017), which address issues of authority and consensus in medieval Europe.
