Miguel Illescas
MIGUEL ILLESCAS (Barcelona, 1965) holds the title of International Grandmaster of Chess. He has been the absolute champion of Spain eight times and was among the top thirty players in the world in the nineties. With a background in computer science and a vocation for teaching, at the end of his sports career he was an advisor for IBM in the development of the Deep Blue machine—which defeated Garry Kasparov—and worked as a coach for world champion Vladimir Kramnik. He is currently a regular contributor to La Vanguardia, runs the portal @ajedrez21.com and edits the chess magazine Peón de Rey, in addition to bringing chess to schools through his EDAMI school, in Barcelona. He also works as a writer and speaker.
