Nathalie Heinich
Nathalie Heinich (Marseille, August 3, 1955) is a French sociologist specialized in the sociology of art, particularly contemporary art. She earned her doctorate from the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) under the supervision of Pierre Bourdieu, and is a research director at the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and co-founder of the journal Sociologie de l'art. Her focus has shifted from critical sociology to a comprehensive sociology centered on values and social identities.
Among her most notable works are The Glory of Van Gogh (1991), From Painter to Artist (1993), The Triple Game of Contemporary Art (1998), The Sociology of Art (2001), The Paradigm of Contemporary Art (2014), and Des valeurs. Une approche sociologique (2017). Her publications address issues such as the status of the artist, the reception of contemporary art, and the social construction of values. She has been awarded prizes such as the Montyon Philosophy Prize from the French Academy and the Pétrarque Essay Prize.
