Wegen des groen Reichtums gyptens nahm sie unter den rmischen Provinzen eine gewisse, frher jedoch oft berschtzte Sonderstellung ein: gypten galt als die Kornkammer des Imperiums. Schon seit 273 v. Chr. bestanden freundschaftliche Beziehungen zwischen der rmischen Republik und den Ptolemern. Sptestens als mitten im zweiten Punischen Krieg, im Jahr 210 v. Chr., eine Hungersnot in Italien ausbrach, die einzig durch eine groe Getreidelieferung Knig Ptolemaios IV. von gypten gelindert wurde, war den Rmern die Bedeutung des Knigreichs am Nil bewusst.
