The son of a slaveholder, Samuel Dawson abhors slavery. In 1857, Samuel challenges the paradigms of Southern culture by befriending Will, an enslaved boy his father has recently purchased. Samuel's father demands that Samuel end the friendship but can offer no rational reason for doing so.

When Samuel is put in charge of his father's plantation, the son begins an audacious experiment. He treats the slaves as human beings.
