ألا تحلم بأن يكون لك بيت كبير واسع، وأن تتزوّج امرأة جميلة وترتاح من الحياة في الشوارع؟ لو كان عندي بيت بحجم هذه البناية المقابلة لنا، لما وضعت على نوافذه ستارة واحدة. أحبّ أن أرى ما حولي دائمًا. ولا أستطيع الرؤية إلّا في النور! حتى في غرفة نومك؟! نعم! لا مشكلة عندي في أن يراني الآخرون وأنا نائم. ليس عندي ما أخفيه عن أعين الناس. بل إنّني أشعر بالأمان وأنا نائم على الرصيف، محروسًا بأعين المارّة. أخاف من الأماكن المغلقة بالأبواب والجدران والستائر والفراغ! خاصّة إذا كنت وحدي! ولا تغار على امرأتك الجميلة من أن تأكلها أعين المتطفّلين؟ العيون لا تأكل، يا أستاذ! بل هي تعطي بقدر ما تأخذ، وأحيانًا أكثر! أنت فيلسوف كبير يا برهوم! Don't you dream of having a big, spacious house, marrying a beautiful woman, and finding comfort from the life you're living in the streets? If I had a house the size of this building across from us, I wouldn't put any curtains on its windows. I love to be able to always see what's around me. And I can only see in the light! Even in your bedroom?! Yes! I have no problem with others seeing me while I sleep. I have nothing to hide from people's eyes. In fact, I feel safe while sleeping on the sidewalk, watched by the eyes of passersby. I fear enclosed spaces with doors, walls, curtains, and emptiness! Especially when I'm alone! But don't you worry about intrusive eyes feasting on your beautiful wife? Eyes don't feast, sir! Instead, they give as much as they take, and sometimes even more! You're a great philosopher, Barhoum!
