Fourteen-year-old Nova searches for her lost parents' spirits within the bright flocks of ethereal lights that swirl throughout her city. Wandering spirits' memories fade, but even so, she and her brother need their family. When she suddenly starts hearing the spirits speak, success seems within reach. She expands her search with the help of three new friends: a water spirit bound in a silvery mechanical wolf, the cute boy who tends its metal wolf, and another spirit whisperer girl.

Unlike her parents, the wealthiest, most powerful people tie their spirits to their mummified bodies to continue their "lives" after death. Nova's rare whispering ability lands her a coveted position serving a mummy, but not everyone admires them the way she does. As the shadowy group Star Rise begins attacking mummies, Nova scrambles to defend her city's spirits. But the more spirits she protects, the more she stirs up dangerous secrets about her parents. Does she even still want to find Mom and Dad? How far will she go to save her brother and friends from her parents' fate?
