Ciudad conquistada" es la más amarga y oscura de las primeras novelas de Victor Serge, quien se anticipó a Orwell y a Koestler y fue además uno de los primeros en calificar como totalitario al régimen soviético. La obra fue enviada por fragmentos a Francia, donde vio la luz en 1932, cuando el autor estaba a punto de ser desterrado a los Urales. Ambientada en el Petrogrado de la guerra civil que siguió a la Revolución rusa, narra el terror rojo y el terror blanco, pero sobre todo el rojo: Serge describe cómo los nuevos amos de la antigua ciudad de los zares se valen de la Checa para eliminar a sus adversarios políticos y consolidar su poder.
