Mühsam sucht er nach Puzzlestücken, Hinweisen und Erklärungen, die belegen, dass er der Diplompsychologe Bertrand Duras ist, mit Praxis am Bois de Boulogne, in Paris. Neben der Behandlung seiner illustren Patienten findet er mit Unterstützung seiner Haushaltshilfe Giselle, seinem Freund, dem Theaterregisseur, Atheisten und Schürzenjäger Yves Battiston und seiner naiven Sprechstundenhilfe Odile, so manchen Hinweis und Erklärung für seine Existenz. Dazu muss er ein paar rätselhafte Knoten seines Privatlebens entwirren und seinem Freund Yves aus der amourösen Patsche helfen, in die der sich immer wieder hineinstürzt. Bis eines Tages, - ja bis eines Tages die Erklärung decodiert wird, auf eine Weise, die alle und alles in ein wahres Chaos manövriert und so manche Überraschung bereit hält.
