Die koronare Herzkrankheit ist eine der häufigsten Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen, von der die Weltbevölkerung betroffen ist. Sie ist sowohl in den Industrieländern als auch in den Entwicklungsländern die häufigste Todesursache. Ihr grundlegender pathophysiologischer Mechanismus ist einfach: Es handelt sich um ein Missverhältnis zwischen der Sauerstoffzufuhr und dem Sauerstoffbedarf des Herzmuskels, das zu einer mehr oder weniger ausgedehnten Ischämie führt, die sich in stabiler oder instabiler Angina pectoris, einem Myokardinfarkt oder einem plötzlichen Herztod äu ert. Früher galt sie als ausschlie lich atherosklerotische Erkrankung, bei der unter dem Einfluss von kardiovaskulären Risikofaktoren wie: Rauchen, Diabetes, Dyslipidämie... eine Cholesterinansammlung in der Koronararterienwand (die atherosklerotische Plaque) zu einer Verringerung des inneren Lumens führt, wodurch das Ungleichgewicht und die Symptome entstehen.
