Au debut d'avril 1913, de retour a Montreal, il travaille comme traducteur pour l'entreprise Lewis Brothers Limited, tout en dactylographiant son roman sur la machine de son employeur en arrivant tot le matin au bureau. Le 26 juin, il expedie celui-ci au journal Le Temps, qui le publiera integralement en 21 episodes, tous les jours entre le 27 janvier et le 19 fevrier 19142. Entre-temps, il quitte Montreal en direction de l'Ouest canadien ou il souhaite participer aux moissons. A Chapleau, ou il s'est arrete, il meurt a 32 ans, happe par un train avec un compagnon d'equipee australien le 8 juillet 1913. L'accident reste encore difficilement explicable."
