En la tragedia de Sófocles, Edipo no era solo el héroe en lucha contra el destino, sino la figura en la que se cruzaban y entraban en conflicto los antiguos y los nuevos dioses, el poder de la naturaleza y el saber humano. Los propios dioses y los hombres. Pero Edípo no cuenta una historia. Solo señala un rasgo estructural de la relación entre el hombre y el ser: el fracaso. Hólderlin se revelará como el mejor lector de Sófocles, y en su extraña traducción de la tragedia, en la encrucijada de 180, irá más allá del texto griego: la catástrofe humana es indisociable de la propia catástrofe divina. Hólderlin presentará con toda la expresividad moderna lo que en Sófocles eran primerizas señales: la imposibilidad de las palabras para ser sagradas, el propio fracaso de lo divino o la ruina de la conciencia. Esta versión ya no toma a Edipo solo como un rey. sino como la misma figura de lo humano.

SOPHOCLES (c. 496-406 B.C.) is one of the great authors of Greek theater. Born in Colonus Hippius, his life was closely linked to the most splendid era of Athens, where he played a prominent role in its cultural aspect. He is mainly responsible for the consolidation of dramatic art as a genre, both for his formal inventions and his thematic and conceptual findings. Author of more than a hundred works, only seven of his tragedies have been preserved intact (Ajax, Antigone, The Women of Trachis, Oedipus Rex, Electra, Philoctetes, and Oedipus at Colonus), some of which are undisputed peaks of world literature.

Friedrich Hölderlin (1770–1843) was a German poet, novelist, and philosopher, considered one of the most important figures of Romanticism and German idealism. He was born on March 20, 1770, in Lauffen am Neckar, in southwestern Germany. His childhood was marked by the premature death of his father, after which he was raised by his mother and stepfather. He studied Theology at the seminary in Tübingen, where he befriended future thinkers such as Hegel and Schelling.

Although initially destined for the religious ministry, Hölderlin leaned towards literature and philosophy. His work combines influences from Greek classicism, German idealist thought, and a deep spiritual sentiment. His poetry, infused with references to mythology and nature, seeks a synthesis between the human and the divine.

His novel Hyperion or The Hermit in Greece (1797–1799) and his lyrical poetry—including odes and hymns—established him as an innovator of poetic language. From 1806, his mental health severely deteriorated, and he lived secluded in Tübingen, under the care of a family friend, until his death in 1843.

Hölderlin was virtually forgotten in his lifetime, but his legacy influenced modern poets such as Rilke, Celan, and Heidegger.
