Emil Cioran (Rășinari, 1911 - Paris, 1995) was a Romanian-French philosopher and essayist, known for his aphoristic style and deep philosophical pessimism. He studied philosophy in Bucharest, where he befriended Eugène Ionesco and Mircea Eliade. In 1937, he moved to Paris with a scholarship from the French Institute, where he lived until his death.

Among his most notable works are "A Short History of Decay" (1949), "The Trouble With Being Born" (1973), and "The Temptation to Exist" (1956), all in the genre of philosophical essay. His first book, "On the Heights of Despair" (1934), was awarded the Commission Prize and the Young Writers Prize in Romania.
