Publicada en 1908 junto con otros cinco relatos de diversa extensión en un volumen titulado «A set of six», EL DUELO toma como asunto el enfrentamiento de dos oficiales del ejército de Napoleón –enfrentamiento tan empecinado como misterioso en sus orígenes– que se prolonga en el tiempo hasta adquirir dimensiones casi legendarias. Contra el fondo de las guerras napoleónicas –de las que Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) oyó hablar mucho en su mocedad– y de la Francia que alumbraron, esta breve novela es algo más que «una seria y sincera tentativa de pequeña ficción histórica», como la calificó años más tarde el propio autor: no sólo es un relato vivo y delicioso que se lee con gusto, sino que encierra una reflexión sobre la evanescente naturaleza de la ofensa, a menudo más dependiente de la interpretación de los hombres que de una convención social del honor.(*CR*)

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) was a Polish-British writer known for his tales about the sea, colonialism, and the psychological struggles of individuals facing adversity. His work is characterized by the exploration of themes such as morality, despair, and the absurdity of human existence. Born in Ukraine, Conrad spent much of his life as a sailor before turning to writing, which significantly influenced his narrative style.

Among his most notable works are Heart of Darkness (1899), Lord Jim (1900), and Nostromo (1904). Although he did not receive major awards during his lifetime, his influence on 20th-century literature is undeniable, being considered a precursor of modern narrative.
