El día que es arrestado, K. abre la puerta de su habitación para informarse sobre su desayuno. Acusado de un crimen que desconoce por jueces que no ve nunca y conforme a leyes que nadie puede explicarle, K. abrirá un número inimaginable de puertas intentando comprender la situación.

A medida que el proceso ocupe más y más lugar en su vida, cada puerta constituirá una traba cada vez más alienante en el proceso judicial al que se ve sometido. Solo K. parece darse cuenta, en una lucidez irrisoria e inútil hasta el fin, de la total ausencia de hechos o eventos que clarifiquen la interminable incongruencia de su confinamiento.
