Elizabeth Smart nacio en Canada, en 1913, pero siendo muy joven se traslado a Londres donde estudio teatro, pintura y piano. Un dia, entro en una libreria y descubrio un libro de poemas firmado por un tal George Barker. Se enamoro perdidamente de aquel hombre desconocido y juro casarse con el, sin saber que el poeta ya estaba casado. Movio cielo y tierra hasta dar con el, que por aquel entonces se encontraba trabajando en Japon. Finalmente ambos se conocieron y e resultado fue una intensa pasion que dio como fruto cuatro hijos y una novela. En esta biografia, la autora, tambien amiga de Elizabeth, reconstruye la trayectoria vital de una mujer original, que fallecio en 1986 tras regresar a Canada y escribir un segundo libro.
