Synopsis "False Liberty"

Does freedom mean belonging only to oneself-or learning how to belong rightly?False Liberty moves beneath political conflict into the spiritual assumptions that shape modern freedom. In the Fourth Discourse of Beyond Sovereignty: The Discourses, John Zavala Jr. distinguishes liberty from license and self-government from self-sovereignty. He asks what happens when desire, identity, pride, and personal choice are treated as authorities beyond truth, duty, relationship, or higher law.The inquiry follows that inward struggle into consumer culture, religion, political rights, nationalism, security, and power. Its central concern is not freedom itself, but the transformation of freedom into a claim that no rightful obligation may stand above the individual will. This is not a defense of authoritarian government, coercive religion, abusive authority, sexual shame, or blind obedience. The book honors genuine liberation from slavery, domination, cruelty, and exploitation. Its proposed answer is not a return to chains, but a deeper freedom grounded in self-control, responsibility, sonship before the Father, and brotherhood among persons. For readers exploring faith, ethics, autonomy, and the moral life, False Liberty asks whether a freedom stripped of belonging can finally become another form of captivity-and what it would mean for freedom to be healed.
