Bismillahir-Rahmanir-Raheem. In the Name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. This book, Islamic Studies, has been written to meet the needs of students preparing for AS and A-Level examinations in Religious Studies and Islamic Studies, including Cambridge International and UK exam boards. The study of Islam at A-Level is more than learning facts. It is an invitation to understand a faith that has shaped civilisation, law, ethics, art, and spirituality for over 1400 years. The aim is to combine academic accuracy with clarity, helping students to understand, analyse, and evaluate Islamic teachings. May this book serve students, teachers, and anyone seeking a deeper understanding of Islam. This textbook is written for A-Level students of Islamic Studies and Religious Studies. It covers core beliefs, practices, sources, and contemporary issues in Islam. It asks us to engage with revelation, reason, history, and contemporary issues with both academic rigour and spiritual reflection. As a British scholar and educator, I have written this text with three aims in mind: Academic Clarity. A-Level requires students to analyse sources, evaluate scholarly views, and construct balanced arguments. Each chapter therefore presents key beliefs, practices, and debates in Islam with clear explanations, Qur'anic references, Hadith, and references to classical and contemporary scholarship. Faithful Understanding of Islam is a living tradition. This book seeks to present Islamic teachings authentically, drawing from the Qur'an, Sunnah, and the consensus of scholars, while also engaging respectfully with modern questions that young Muslims and non-Muslims ask in classrooms today. Relevance to the Student: Whether you are Muslim seeking to deepen your knowledge, or a student of religion approaching Islam for the first time, this book is designed to help you succeed in exams and, more importantly, to think critically about faith, ethics, society, and the purpose of life. The life of the Prophet (570-632 CE): Muhammad's (pbuh) early life in Mecca, the beginning of revelation in 610 CE, the years of persecution and private/public proclamation, the Hijrah to Medina in 622 CE, and the consolidation of the Muslim community through to the conquest of Mecca in 630 CE and his death in 632 CE (Unit 1). This period established the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the foundational model of prophetic leadership that all later Islamic thought continues to draw upon. The Rashidun (Rightly-Guided) Caliphate (632-661 CE): the leadership of Abu Bakr, Umar, Uthman, and Ali, during which the Qur'an was formally compiled into a single authoritative text, Islamic rule expanded rapidly beyond Arabia, and the foundational (and, in Ali's case, contested) patterns of Muslim political leadership were established (Unit 4). This period also saw the beginnings of the division between Sunni and Shi'i Islam.I pray that this book will be a means of benefit. If there is any good in it, it is from Allah. Any shortcomings are mine alone, and I ask for your sincere feedback to improve future editions.May Allah accept it and make it a source of knowledge that continues to benefit others.
