Jacob es un muchacho judío, dulce y alegre, en la Argelia colonial francesa de los años cuarenta. Culto y sensible en un mundo de hombres duros, coléricos e ignorantes, es reclutado en junio de 1944 para liberar a Francia. Los suyos lo ignoran todo de la guerra en la que va a participar. Esa gente modesta, pobre y tosca aguarda con impaciencia el regreso de su hijo pródigo, su orgullo, un valiente y un héroe. Pero también ignoran que pronto los acontecimientos históricos se precipitarán, provocando el destierro de toda la familia.
