Durante diez minutos, el público que llenaba la sala quedó bajo los efectos de una impresión inolvidable. Recién entonces rompió la entusiasta adhesión al pensamiento del autor en un huracán de aplausos. Nunca una obra teatral ha llegado tan ondamente al alma del pueblo... En aquel momento vio elevarse gigantescamente sobre las pasiones ardientes y fugaces el espíritu imperecedero de un alma libre, grande y vacilante, de una mentalidad universal en la que reposaba el germen de la enciclopédica obra que desde entonces fue realizando el autor sin desfallecimiento y sin tregua.
