Uno de los más grandes poemas de la humanidad. Obra del italiano Dante Alighieri (1265-1321), el tema es frecuente en la literatura medieval: un viaje por el mundo de ultratumba, cuyos precedentes se hallan en la mitología grecolatina, mezclados con leyendas nórdicas y árabes, y todo ello teñido de fervor cristiano. El conjunto de la obra comprende 14.333 versos endecasílabos en italiano y consta de tres partes: Infierno, Purgatorio y Paraíso. Escrita en primera persona, el poeta, acompañado por Virgilio, se purifica en las dos primeras, para entrar en la tercera con Beatriz, su amada, donde ambos se extasían ante la contemplación de la Santísima Trinidad.
