El joven teniente Tommy Hart, único superviviente de la tripulación de un B-25 abatido durante un bombardeo, pasa sus días confinado en un campo de prisioneros alemán, ajeno a las actividades cotidianas de sus compañeros de encierro. Solitario, dedica su tiempo a estudiar Derecho, carrera que tuvo que interrumpir cuando estalló la guerra. El tedio con que se suceden los meses acaba el día en que el aviador afroamericano Lincoln Scott llega al campo y se convierte en el objetivo de la animosidad racial de Vincent Bedford, un condecorado capitán de bombardero de Misisipi, muy popular entre los prisioneros. Cuando Bedford aparece asesinado en las letrinas del campo, todas las sospechas recaen en Scott, por más que éste insiste en su inocencia.
