Axel Scheffler studied visual communication at the Bath Academy of Arts in Corsham, and it was there that he decided to become an illustrator. He began his career almost immediately illustrating children's books, and to this day he has contributed more than 120 titles. Axel Scheffler was born in Hamburg in 1957 and spent his entire childhood there. Later he moved to London to study Visual Communication at the Bath Academy of Arts in Corsham, and it was then that he decided to become an illustrator. His most famous character is the Gruffalo, which first appeared in the book of that name written by Julia Donaldson and which inspired the 2009 film. He currently divides his time illustrating, coordinating events, and attending festivals.
