Ziele der LKW-Maut sind die Finanzierungssicherung von Verkehrsinfrastruktur, ein Verlagerungseffekt von Gütertransporten von Strasse auf Schiene und Wasserwege, die Verbesserung der Wettbewerbsfähigkeit von deutschen Transportunternehmen sowie die technologische Vorreiterrolle in Europa. Zwei technische Lösungen konkurrieren um die Aufträge in Deutschland und Österreich: die Mikrowellentechnik sowie eine Lösung auf GPS/GSM-Basis.
